Rebids by the Opening Bidder

Point Requirements to Respond

You must respond to your partner's opening suit bid if you have 6 or more points in your hand.

Weak Responses

If your hand values itself to 6-10 points, you should make a minimum response to your partner. Your only choices in this case are to bid a new suit at the 1 level, bid 1NT, or raise your partner's suit by 1.

Bidding a New Suit

You may bid a new suit at the 1-level (a one-over-one bid) with at least 6 points in your hand. A new suit bid at the 1 level tells your partner that you have a suit of your own, but does not discount his suit as the final contract. Example:
